Birth Doula Virginia

Doula Services

What do Doulas do?

Doulas provide incredible continuous emotional and physical support and even American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing and Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses  agree in their effectiveness.

Because each birth is unique to itself, each mother is going to have different needs, we get to know you and your birth companion(s) by establishing a personal relationship, so that when your special time comes, you feel confident and safe during your birth.

As soon as labor begins, we provide continuous physical and emotional support through the labor and delivery of your precious miracle. During birth, we can help to make suggestions for positioning and relaxation techniques, assisting with massage, and counter pressure, and other comfort measures. We also offer  perspective and valuable information should any issues arise.

We stay with you for the first few hours of life to support you in the beginning of your parenting journey and assist with breastfeeding. We will also be there to help with any postpartum questions and talk through your birth experience.

DOULAS DO:

  • Assist your birth partner, helping them to support you, and to navigate through the birthing journey

  • Help families become informed about available birth choices and encourage you and your partner to advocate for your desires

  • Provide emotional support, reassurance and comfort

  • Provide physical support using comfort measures: breathing, movement, positioning, etc.

  • CONTINUOUS care throughout birth

  • Identify ways to encourage the "progress" of labor through position changes and movement

A DOULA DOES NOT:

  • I DO NOT replace or take over the role of your partner

  • I DO NOT allow personal values or biases to affect your care

  • I DO NOT pressure you into making decisions

  • I DO NOT offer personal opinions or advice, but will provide evidenced-based information

FAQ’s

How is a doula different from a labor and delivery nurse or partner/spouse?

The most important thing a woman can have is continuous support during her birthing time. Nurses are wonderful! Unfortunately, they often have other responsibilities, and can’t always remain by your side. Your doula only has one woman to focus on - and that is YOU! Though your partner is essential for a positive experience and may continuously be with you throughout labor, they will need to eat, use the bathroom and rest. In some cases, they may have limited knowledge or experience with birth, medical procedures, and hospital procedures. Doulas and partners work together to build a cohesive support team.

Do I need a Doula?

Yes! Doulas know birth, and doulas speak hospital. I will help you and your partner to navigate through the process and help you to feel confident and at ease. Your only responsibility should be to relax and allow me to focus on how to make you feel as good as possible. I will support you and your partner in every choice, so that you feel encouraged, empowered, and in charge of your experience

Think of it like this- Would you climb Mount Everest alone? Even with the mental and physical capablity, and an awesome partner to help you, you'd still want to educate yourself on what to expect, and how to prepare! But most importantly- take a guide who is experienced, who's done it before, knows the alternate routes and can help you navigate the unknowns.

Is it expensive?

That depends on perspective. Think about weddings. We pay thousands of dollars for ONE DAY. Even in a small wedding you have the dress, the cake, the suits, the venue, the flowers, the catering, the makeup and hair, the shoes, and of course the photographer. Even being conservative, these things add up! Why do we do it? Because it's supposed to be one of the most important days of our lives and we want it to be perfect!

Birth will stay with you every day. You will revisit the moments and the journey time and time again. Which is why it is so important to make it a special and positive day too! Taking classes to prepare yourself and having the additional support to help you to have the best birth possible is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself as a mother. A positive birth experienced is linked to a happier postpartum, and can even help with baby bonding.

Money should never be the reason you have a bad experience. We offer flexible payment plans and options to work with you so that you can have the birth you desire. Visit investments to learn more about available packages and prices.
